Commissions, Collabs, Contests & Trades

Tue Nov 18, 2008, 5:31 PM
Current Status: Accepting requests.

Well, I’ve always been pretty laid back about this kind of thing—if someone asked, then I came up with pricing and all that other stuff that falls under the category of ‘so not fun’ on the spot. But I made a new account here on DA to try to organize my life a bit, so there’s no sense in doing things half-assed, right? That’s the theory anyway.

With that in mind, here’s a list of any and all pertinent information as regards Commissions, Collabs, Contests and Art Trades—yes, in that order. ...it'll be a long journal. Haha.

But first, here's a quick list of things I won't draw. If this is what you're looking for, don't bother reading any further:

1. Hentai. You can request something that's sexy or slightly sensual and if I think I can pull it off I'll agree, but I will absolutely not draw porn for you. Don't ask. Ever.

2. Fan art for series that I'm not familiar with or characters I detest. I don't think you can really capture a character you don't know regardless of how many references you're given. To be honest, I would much rather do original work than fan work, but I'm willing to do fan work for a series I enjoy. However, I also reserve the right to refuse to draw fan art of characters I dislike immensely (like Sasuke.).

I accept payment via: Check, Money Order, and Paypal. Check or money order preferred, but mostly because I'm a bit specially-abled when it comes to paypal.

Commissions

Art Commissions: These are character commissions. Backgrounds are not included because I suck at them and every time I try they make me die a little inside. I prefer to work on original characters, but will also do fan art (see above)--but I'm really not all that good at fan art...
I have '3 or more characters' listed below. I will tell you right now that I will not take this kind of commission often and pricing is adjusted high to dissuade people from asking. It's incredibly difficult for me to do that many characters in one piece. It's on there because I need practice, even if I really don't like to do it, but I will probably turn down most '3 or more' requests and only take one that sparks my interest every few months.

Pricing:
*All prices are in USD*

Digital Only:

Lineart:

1 Character: $4.00
2 Characters $6.00
3 or More $15.00

Color:

1 Character $7.00
2 Characters $10.00
3 or More $20.00

with Matte Print(standard USPS mail-free shipping within US):

Lineart:

1 Character $ 8.00
2 Characters $10.00
3 or More $20.00

Color:

1 Character $10.00
2 Characters $15.00
3 or More $25.00

with Glossy Print:

Add $3 USD to Matte Print Pricing.

I know what you’re thinking: Glossy paper can’t be THAT MUCH more expensive than matte print paper! You’re probably right. I haven’t actually compared the prices. But here’s the thing: I don’t like glossy prints. I don’t like the texture of the paper, the shine, the fact the ink fades about ten times more quickly than matte prints (in my experience), and my printer agrees with me. It eats glossies for breakfast—and every other meal actually. The only thing it hates more is perforated paper. So if you want a glossy print it will take me three sheets of paper and much aggravation to get one. I’m willing to do it if you want it that badly, but you're paying for my irritation on this one.

Other Commissions:

Floral Hair Clips: It's impossible for me to come up with standard pricing for these since cloth flowers have such an extreme price range. Most run for about $20.00. Some Examples of my hair clips can be found on my old account.

[link] (this clip is currently available for $20 USD)
Typically a hair clip commission involves you telling me what colors you want and I will get as close to this basic design as possible.

Dreamcatchers:

Small: (ring measures approximately 3-4 inches) $12.00
[link]
Medium: (ring measures approximately 5-6 inches) $20.00
[link]
Large: (ring measures 7 inches or larger) $25.00

For Double-Corded Dream Catchers like this one: [link] Add $5 to the prices above. They are MUCH harder to do and by the time I have the basic ring done my hands are practically twitching. I like the way they look though so I'm willing to do them.

Everything Else: Contact me. This is all I can think of for now.

Legalities and Other Nonsense:

1. I reserve the right to sell any and all of my artwork as prints. This includes commission work (if I deem it worthy). If I do so, I will not turn it into a print until at least one month after the original commission. If you do not wish a commission to be released as a print, you must request it! I understand some people might have original characters they want drawn that they have a strong attachment to, for example—but I won't know if you don't tell me! That said, given that artwork commissions are basically character commissions, most aren’t that likely to become prints anyway.

2. I reserve the right to turn down a commission request with or without reason. I may dislike the character or design, feel that the request is beyond my abilities, have a waiting list too long for my stress level, or just be suffering from art block. I’m not obligated to give you a reason, but most of the time I will, with apologies. I don’t like to turn down any commission work, but when things are impossible, they’re just impossible. Please respect that.

3. I will do my best to keep an updated 'waiting list' at the bottom of this journal so you know where you are in line, but don't expect me to complete more than 2 or 3 commissions in any one month period. I have a lot of projects on my plate. I will also try to keep a notation as to whether or not I am accepting commission work at the top at this time, but that doesn't mean I don't sometimes bite off more than I can chew. Bear with me.

4. THIS IS THE BIG ONE. If you are requesting a piece as a gift, or have any sort of deadline as to when you need it by, you ABSOLUTELY MUST TELL ME THAT FIRST. Before worrying about the details of the commission, I need to know if I will be able to complete it within your time frame.

Collaborations

I do four basic kinds of collaborations. Lineart, Color, Lineart and Color.

Lineart Type 1:
A lineart collab is one in which I do the basic sketch and lineart and you (whoever you may be) do the color work in the medium of your choice.

Lineart Type 2:

The other type of lineart commission is where you provide me with a neat sketch and I do the lineart, someone other than me is then responsible for the color work. Keep in mind that I do my lineart by hand on computer paper. Your sketch will need to be large enough that I can print it out without considerable blurring. It's not worth it for me to do lineart for you if I have to reconstruct half of the basic artwork.

Color:

A color collab is one in which I am doing the color work only. This means you supply me with the lineart and I color it in the medium of my choice (almost exclusively photoshop). Whether you did the sketch and lineart, or someone else did the sketch and you did the lineart or vice versa makes no nevermind to me. This kind of collab just means all I am responsible for is color. I WILL NOT color sketches and doodles. I'm not being a snob, they just never come out right. You will never see sketch work from me because I'm a very messy sketcher, but if your sketch is very dark and tidy, it might be good enough to constitute linework, check with me. Basically I'm not going to spend half of my coloring time cleaning up stray edges and eraserdust. That's not what a color collaboration is.

Color and Lines:

This kind of collab means that you are providing me with a sketch. The sketch should be tidy enough that I can tell what lines are meant to be there, and what lines are extraneous. My job will be to take that sketch, create the linework from it, and then add color. Keep in mind that I do my lineart by hand, typically on computer paper with microns or brush pen. Your sketch will need to be large enough for me to print without substantial blurring.

Legalities and Other Nonsense:

1. It is to be understood that collaborative works are strictly NOT FOR PROFIT unless otherwise agreed upon, in writing, by all parties involved. That means I can't make it into a print ...and neither can you. You can't sell it on a t-shirt or mug, and neither can I. They're just for fun.

2. All collaborations must be approved by all parties involved and credited as such. For example. Your friend drew a sketch. You did the lineart. Now you want me to color it. I would need to receive a note from your friend as well as you to make sure I'm not working on someone's work who doesn't want me working on it. A note is fine, just something to tell me 'yes, it's fine with me too.'

Yes, you can submit the final version to your DA, but ONLY if you give credit to all people involved. I will link back to the line artist, the sketch artist, the color artist—whoever is involved in a project in addition to me and give them credit for their work and expect the same courtesy.

Contests

I won't host contests often, but once in a while I might get the hankering to see some nifty artists' renditions of different characters/situations. When I do, I'll host a contest. Contests will be considered null and void with less than five submissions and will run for an indeterminate amount of time (each contest will be different, obviously).

Now, I'm too damn poor to offer money as rewards for contests, so the reward will usually be something like a full body line art of the character of your choice, or maybe a story based on your artwork, or...uh...something. Basically, you do creative stuff for me, I do creative stuff for you. Yes, it's probably silly. I'd love to offer money or items as prizes for contests, but at this point in time I'm just not financially able to do so.

Art Trades

This isn't much different from collaborations. Once in a while, I'll agree to do an art trade. You draw one of my original characters, I'll draw one of yours, or if you catch me in an EXTREMELY GIVING mood, you might coax me into drawing some fanart. Note me and we'll see what my schedule is like, basically.

Well, how's that for thorough?
